Discover unique parts of Maui, Hawai’i with a Lahaina ATV adventure

Let’s face it, none of the Hawai’ian Islands are exactly flat, and especially Maui. So, to explore any parts of the island above sea level, you either need to be super-fit or have a vehicle. However, the islands of Hawai’i are also covered with lush undergrowth interwoven with rainforests, so your average sedan or people carrier, even a truck won’t let you see much more than anything close to the roadside. Fortunately, there is a solution to this problem, and it’s a really exciting one.

That’s right, the all-terrain vehicle or ATV as it is more commonly known will allow you to explore parts of the beautiful island of Maui around Lahaina ‘from the comfort of your own seat’ on a Lahaina ATV adventure tour! Mind you, when we say ‘comfort’ we use this term loosely as the terrain will include mud and water, which means that by the end of your adventure, you may well need a change of clothes. Part of the clue to the fact you might get a bit wet comes from the term ‘rain forest’ and the elevation at Lahaina reaches 2,000 feet, so you could well find yourself literally driving with your head in the clouds!

The history of the ATV. Did you know…?

Don’t worry, we’re not going to bore you to death with a long history lesson about the ATV. Suffice it to say that the first ATV was developed by the Japanese firm Honda in 1970 as a means to boost vehicle sales when motorbike sales tailed off in the winter. In 1982, Suzuki developed the first four-wheel quad.  Pretty quickly farmers realised these ATVs could make their lives so much easier, and then the leisure market realized that anybody could have loads of fun driving these vehicles across the most challenging terrain.

Get to discover Maui’s flora and fauna up close

As you can imagine, with the nearest continent to the Hawai’ian Islands being over 2,000 kilometers away, Maui has a few plants that are unique to the islands, and these are just the ones known about. That’s the problems with dense rainforest – it’s surprising what you can hide in there. It was only last year that on the slopes of Helu, just above Lahaina, that a new plant, the Cyanea heluensis was described for the first time. Who knows what you might discover on your own ATV adventure?!

From switch-back trails to riverbed crossings and steep inclines, you’ll certainly be challenged by this exciting terrain at Lahaina, and you’ll definitely have to keep your eyes on the track, which will be a challenge in itself with so much to look at around you, and beyond.
