Classic Haleakala Summit Morning Tour
A 7-hour Maui tour exploring Haleakala National Park with a knowledgeable guide and visiting Maui’s Upcountry and North Shore towns.
Haleakala, meaning “House of the Sun,” is the world’s largest dormant volcano and has been inactive since its 1790 eruption. The summit of Haleakala is said to be most dramatic at sunrise and sunset, but unforgettable views can be seen even during the day. The entrance to Haleakala National Park is at an elevation of 6,500 feet and offers many scenic hiking trails and photogenic sites. See Maui from above and below the clouds and feel the difference in temperature and landscape as you make your way to the summit.
On this tour, you will learn about the history, geology, and ecosystems of Haleakala National Park from NAI (The National Association for Interpretation) certified guides. You will gain a deeper understanding of Maui’s nature and culture as you explore Haleakala National Park with your guide. The guide to guest ratio is 1:12.
The Haleakala National Park is also home to many rare plants and animals. The Nene goose, Hawaii’s state bird, was hunted to about 30 birds in 1952 and was driven to the brink of extinction. However, breeding has increased the number of Nene gooses, and it is estimated that approximately 2,500 Nene gooses now live on Maui. Also found on Haleakala is the silversword, a succulent plant whose leaves are covered with silver hairs. This rare alpine plant grows on volcanic cinders and is said to be able to withstand strong winds, low temperatures, and dehydration.
After visiting Haleakala national Park, you and your knowledgeable guide will visit various Maui towns:
Kula: Upcountry Maui town famous for its lavender, protea, macadamia nut farms and botanical gardens
Makawao: A town with a mix of Hawaiian cowboy (paniolo) traditions and a vibrant arts community
Pa’ia: Surfer town with roots in the sugar cane industry and now home to local art galleries and unique stores and restaurants
Ha’iku: With its roots in pineapple plantations, the town was home to the 4th Marine Division in the 1940s and played an important role in World War II.
