Shore Excursion: Mauna kea & Rainbow Falls Private Tour from Hilo
This 4-hour private tour is fully customizable within the designated tour time and includes two pre-determined stops at Mauna kea Onizuka Observatory and Rainbow Falls.
Journey up Mauna kea, gaining over 9,000 feet in elevation as you head toward the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy. Along the way, take in the mountain’s rugged volcanic terrain, often dusted with snow. At the center, learn about Mauna kea’s cultural significance and its role in astronomical research. The high-altitude landscape is home to unique native plant life and offers sweeping views of the island.
Afterward, visit Rainbow Falls, an 80-foot waterfall that flows over a lava cave. According to Hawaiian legend, this cave is the home of Hina, the moon goddess. Also called Waiānuenue, meaning “rainbow in the water,” the falls are surrounded by lush vegetation and a mango grove. When the sunlight hits just right, mist from the falls creates vibrant rainbows.
With space for up to six guests per vehicle, this small-group tour offers a more intimate experience. The itinerary is flexible, allowing for meal stops, coffee breaks, or additional sights within your scheduled time. Blending nature, science, and local culture, this tour is ideal for those looking to explore the island’s diverse landscapes and history.
